About Brentwood’s Gifted and Talented (GT) and Talent Explore (TE) Program

Brentwood Elementary’s Gifted and Talented (GT) and Talent Explore (TE) programs are designed to move students with high ability at a pace appropriate to their rate of learning through studies that go beyond the age-level or grade-level expectations. Talent Explore identification is for high ability students who do not qualify for Gifted and Talented but demonstrate potential to perform at high levels when grouped with Gifted and Talented students.

Students may be identified as one or more of the following:

  • GT STEM (science and mathematics),
  • GT Humanities (language arts and social studies),
  • Talent Explore STEM (science and mathematics), or
  • Talent Explore Humanities (language arts and social studies).

Brentwood does not have a pull-out Gifted and Talented program. GT-identified students are provided enrichment and differentiation opportunities with other GT students within the classroom.

Additionally, Brentwood has implemented the following programs:

  • Problem-based learning in specified content areas identified as GT
  • Math Pentathalon (Grades 2-5)
  • Film Kids
  • Book Studies

The Nomination and Screening Process

All Brentwood students are eligible to be screened for Gifted and Talented (GT) and Talent Explore (TE) through a nomination and the GATE screening process. Data from several quantitative and qualitative criteria are collected over a three-week period and reviewed by the campus GT Decision-Making Committee.

Screening and testing requires parent/guardian permission by the campus deadline. A variety of measures are used for screening and testing, including assessments for bilingual students. Testing is entirely computer-based.

Students screened for Gifted and Talented who are not identified for GT services are automatically considered for Talent Explore.

How to Nominate Your Child

There’s no permanent counselor and GT Advocate right now, so Ms. Laroche and Ms. Cobb are overseeing the Gifted and Talented Assessment Process.

The first step in the process is to complete the Checklist for Parents and the Parent GT Nomination Form and email them to Amy Shirey (amy.shirey@austinisd.org) during the nomination window for your child’s grade level. You will receive a confirmation response upon receipt of the forms.
